Hanging With JoeJoe the Capybara

samedi 28 février 2015

When we last checked in with JoeJoe the Capybara, he was wolfing down popsicles and cavorting with puppies . Naturally. When you've got the capycharisma that JoeJoe has, the sky's the limit in terms of daily activities.

For instance, why not hop in a cart and browse through Pet Smart? Pups and kitties are a dime a dozen there. Joe Joe is an official Pet Smart Star!

There's nothing like taking time out to have a long, feline-chaperoned nap. Then waking up with a major case of capybedhead.

..and when JoeJoe needs a back scratch, there's nothing like a puppy to assist.

As good looking as JoeJoe is, it's no wonder that he gets all the chicks!

The US Navy's Toilet Bomb

(Photo: Midway Sailor)

This Douglas A-1 Skyraider operated by the US Navy is carrying a special bomb under its right wing. Do you see it?

That's a toilet.

In 1965, the aircraft carrier USS Midway was bombing Vietnam. VA-25, an attack aviation unit of the Navy, operated from the Midway. In October, one of the toilets on the ship cracked. The crew planned to dispose of it. Commander Bill Stoddard, the executive officer of VA-25, came up with a novel way to get rid of the toilet.

To celebrate the six millionth pound of ordnance dropped by his unit, Cdr. Stoddard had the toilet painted with the "Fist of the Fleet" emblem of his unit. It was then loaded onto his Skyraider. Cdr. Stoddard dropped it on a communist target in South Vietnam.

You can see more photos of the toilet bomb at Midway Sailor.

The Case of the Missing Log Cabin

The Klamath County Sheriff’s office in Oregon received a report Tuesday of a stolen house. No, it wasn’t a mobile home, but a 1,500-square-foot log cabin that was completely missing from its foundation. Deputies began an investigation of this unusual crime, the likes of which none of them had ever seen before. Within 48 hours, the cabin was located, almost a mile away.

The property in question is originally purchased by Ronald Niederbrach.

He and a girlfriend, Paulette Kallo, live together for a time in a conventional house on the property. At some point, Miklos Kallo, Paulette's ex-husband, also moves onto the property and she provides care for him as he has health issues.

Miklos Kallo buys a log cabin kit, has it built and stays in the cabin.

Things don't work out between Niederbrach and Paulette, and Niederbrach moves to Sisters.

The Kallos reconcile and live in the house until a fire severely damages it, leaving it uninhabitable. At some point, the property is titled in the names of all three persons.

On July 8, 2014, Miklos Kallo sells the cabin to a fourth party. In September, the buyer moves it to where it was found this week.

Yes, it's a real soap opera. Niederbrach didn’t know the cabin was gone for some months. When he discovered it missing, he asked Paulette Kallo about it, and she said she didn’t know anything. The unnamed buyer of the cabin had no idea there was any dispute over the ownership until the police got involved. The investigation is continuing to determine who, if anyone, had the rights to the structure. You can read the entire story at Oregon Live.

Mouse Trap Pancakes

Ghoulia Childs is a horror movie fan who makes wonderfully terrifying meals. We've previously seen her Cadbury Creme Egg Chestburster.

Here's a great breakfast treat from her kitchen: mouse trap pancakes . This version comes with extra protein and an unusual but tasty syrup.

DIY Electrical Wiring

(YouTube link)

He just wanted to install a new light in the bathroom, but it didn’t turn out exactly right. It looks like a case of two homeowners in a row who did their own wiring, and believe me, building on someone else’s weirdness only leads to more weirdness. At least this couple hasn’t been electrocuted, which is a real possibility when you get this many wires crossed.

I once had a bathroom/bedroom addition built. It didn’t take long to figure out things were wonky, because when you turned off the bathroom light, the alarm clock by the bed stopped. I could’ve called the contractor back to fix it, but he’d screwed up so many other things, he probably would have just made it worse. I got a master electrician to sort things out -after he stopped laughing. -via Viral Viral Videos

A Hydrofoil Surfboard Is the Ultimate Way to Ride the Waves

Foilboards are surfboards with hydrofoil fins built into the bottom. When moving at high speed, the surfer appears to be hovering over the water. Gizmodo's Omar Kardoudi aptly compares it to a Back to the Future II hoverboard.

Foilboards are especially impressive when used by top surfers, like Laird Hamilton. In this video, he rides one off the coast of Raglan, New Zealand. After being towed out into the surf, Hamilton flies over the water on his foilboard.

The Dress That Launched a Thousand Memes

This week saw the internet go crazy over a picture of a dress that appeared to be different colors to different people. It didn’t take long for creative minds to take advantage of the situation. We had tons of people trying to explain the phenomenon, but even better were those who made it funny. As you can see here, Liz Climo used the dress perfectly for her animal characters.

Randall Munroe at xkcd explained how the phenomena worked without a word in his Friday comic. The hover text for this one is priceless. Keep reading for more.

The Houston Zoo made a reference to two memes from Thursday: the dress and the escaped llamas.

Referencing the same two stories, Dan Meth created an illustration to commemorate Buzzfeed’s biggest traffic day ever.

Redditor epwnym posted a sequence from The Matrix that inserted the dress into the drama.

The world of sports looked at the dress a little differently. Athletes and coaches saw all kinds of colors no one else did -as long as those colors were their own team colors.

Someone tried to blame the conundrum on the Illuminati. Found at The Chive.

Redditor Sooprman just added fuel to the fire with new Power Rangers.

But best of all, NeatoShop artist Olipop has t-shirts that commemorate the Great Dress Debate.

Available in two colors, of course. Oh yeah, just because the title says “A Thousand Memes” doesn’t mean I’m going to post them all here.

Mushroom Artist Grows Furniture out of Fungus

Philip Ross is an artist who works in fungus. As a result of his studies and experiments, he's been table to grow large fungi into useful objects. He's even turned fungi into durable bricks that can be used for construction. Ross proposes that we look at fungi as a renewable source of materials for everyday life.

To demonstrate this, Ross has been building functional pieces of furniture using fungi. The magazine Make reports:

Mushrooms, Ross says, are a “self-extinguishing organic material” that can be used to create habitats for humans on Earth or even in space. He is currently working on a prototype, envisioning a demonstration building on the San Francisco waterfront to show how mushrooms can be used as building materials.

“When we’re done with it, we can just push [the building] into the bay,” Ross says. “Mushrooms change the politics and aesthetics of pollution.”

When you gotta go, you gotta go, but where? More and more public restrooms are unisex, or gender-neutral, meaning anyone can use them. Another term is “family” restrooms, even if it’s a one-holer. Signs used to designate these restrooms can take on a real flair, as shown here. See 17 creative restroom signs for a new generation at Buzzfeed.

The Girl Who Gets Gifts from Crows

(Photo: Lisa Mann/BBC)

Blogger David Thompson calls her "an eight-year old queen of the crows." So far, Gabi Mann of Seattle, Washington is using her super power modestly. It's been developing for the past year. What is her power?

Crows bring her things.

(Photo: Katy Sewall/BBC)

Wild crows fly up and drop small objects in front of her. They're gifts. For the past 4 years, she's fed them scraps for fun. Now they're expressing their loyalty. The BBC reports:

The crows would clear the feeder of peanuts, and leave shiny trinkets on the empty tray; an earring, a hinge, a polished rock. There wasn't a pattern. Gifts showed up sporadically - anything shiny and small enough to fit in a crow's mouth.

One time it was a tiny piece of metal with the word "best" printed on it. "I don't know if they still have the part that says 'friend'," Gabi laughs, amused by the thought of a crow wearing a matching necklace.

How should Gabi use this power?

It Looks Like You’re Trying to Accessorize…

Would you like help? Yeah, it’s funny, but as soon as you admit that you get the joke, you’ve dated yourself. Adding googly eyes to a paperclip evokes recollections of Clippy, the annoying virtual assistant in Microsoft Office applications sold from 1997 to 2003. Taco Bell Unveils Cap'n Crunch Covered Balls of Frosting

(Photo: Peter Pham/Food Beast)

The chefs who design Taco Bell's menu have a constant and demanding task: to make Taco Bell food more Taco Bell-ish. The latest result of their ongoing efforts is Cap'n Crunch Delights . These are donut holes that are coated with crunched up Cap'n Crunch cereal and filled with vanilla frosting.

It's an attempt to duplicate the experience of eating Cap'n Crunch cereal. In this case, the creme inside represents the milk in a bowl of cereal.

Banksy Returns To His Roots In Gaza

Just when you thought Banksy was starting to mellow he has made a grand reappearance in Gaza, and shared his new works with the world on his website .

Banksy has been an active part of the graffiti scene in Bristol since the 90s, but the series of images he painted on the side of the Israeli West Bank barrier back in 2005 made the world take notice. Since then he has made quite a chunk of change for himself and garnered famous fans like Brad Pitt, but his recent works simply haven't had the same political energy as those West Bank works.

Well, it seems Banksy has come full circle, and his return to overtly political street art has brought him back to that war-torn region that made him a household name.

The artist recently posted four new pieces on his website that he painted in Gaza, along with a satirical travel video possibly shot by Banksy himself.

One of Banksy's pieces includes this rather thought provoking message to the world:

If we wash our hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless we side with the powerful- we don't remain neutral.

Leonard Nimoy Once Gave Wonderful Advice to a Struggling Mixed-Race Teen

The internet is in mourning right now. Most of us never actually met Leonard Nimoy. But we feel his loss. Why? John Scalzi explains:

Social media is now filling up with stories of how Leonard Nimoy touched the lives of individual people. Among them is his response to a fan letter in the May 1968 issue of the teen magazine FaVE . In it, fan F.C. talks about the struggles that she experiences as an American who is half black and half white. Like Spock, she is divided and judged by both sides. Nimoy explained how the young Spock responded to this dilemma:

Spock decided he would live up to his own personal value and uniqueness. He'd do whatever made him feel best about himself. He decided to listen to that little voice inside him and not to the people around him.

Who is this kid? I don't know. But he has earned the respect of all humanity for devising the perfect way to use a touchscreen interface. It's the opposite of a treadmill desk. There's no more needless, wasteful expenditure of energy by remaining upright, or holding up your hands. Just like there, flat on your back, as nature intended.

Why People See a Different Colored Dress

Now that everyone is arguing over the color of a dress, AsapSCIENCE steps in to explain how people perceive and interpret colors differently. First impressions can be confusing, while knowledge that comes later can fill in some of the gaps. The upshot is that brain is an amazing organ that sifts through both information we have and information we don’t have to make sense of the world around us. -via Tastefully Offensive

Dogs And Babies So Cute You'll Want To Eat Them All Up!

Animals and children possess the power of inherent cuteness, a built in ador-ability that can soften the hardest hearts and elicit an "awww!" from those who aren't normally so free with their feelings.

With all that natural cuteness built into their tiny forms it would be crazy to give them more power over us, but that's what perfectly sane folks do every day when they dress their pets and babies up in food costumes!

Wrap a baby up in a burrito bunting and you've got a squee fiesta in the making

(Image Link)

Likewise, if you dress dogs up like fast food that happy meal pack of hounds will spread smiles wherever they go!

(Image Link)

It seems the power of the food costume works in conjunction with the cuteness level of the critter inside the costume to make them Taco Tuesday level irresistible

(Image Link)

Heck, even a dog with a crazy look on its face looks crazy cute when they're in a taco costume

(Image Link)

Babies in banana buntings are mighty a-peeling

(Image Link)

And dogs dressed like bananas look cutie-licious too, although they seem more slippery somehow

(Image Link)

It's bananas how delightfully banana-y little dogs look in banana costumes, totally bananas!

(Image Link)

Orange you glad I didn't say banana again?

(Image Link)

Speaking of orange- carrots are crunchy orange root vegetables you dig out of the ground, and nutritionists totally dig seeing babies sporting carrot costumes

(Image Link)

Although they'll settle for a toddler in a peanut suit if there aren't any baby carrots laying around

(Image Link)

Dogs and babies get along like peas in a pod

(Image Link)

So it's only fitting that they seem to share the same delicious sense of style

(Image Link)

Although a dog would never be caught dead wearing a piece of fruit!

(Image Link)

Tiny baby kids don't understand why grown up adults get such a kick out of seeing them all dressed up

(Image Link)

But that doesn't stop them from hamming it up for the camera, and acting like little turkeys whenever someone whips out a camera

(Image Link)

Of course, dogs don't know a thing about hamming it up, now do they?

(Image Link)

Dogs are willing to go to great lengths to keep their humans entertained, even boiling like a lobster in the sun for the sake of spreading smiles

(Image Link)

And even those who simply abhor wearing costumes will submit to some minor costuming to make their owner smile

(Image Link)

Babies and toddlers, on the other hand, just hang around looking cute, laughing right along with their silly parents while clogging melting all adult human hearts around them

(Image Link)

Unaware of the just desserts that await those who help keep grown up human folks entertained

(Image Link)

Because babies don't discover how cute they are until they're all grown up, when they finally discover why their parents were always talking about wanting to eat them all up!

(Image Link)

Hopefully these adorable images were enough to pull you out of the winter blues and slap a spring smile on your face, but if they didn't do the trick then you'll relate to this spring chicken!
